The development of three SATCOM On-the-move (SOTM) terminals designed to operate on the WINDS satellite is discussed. All three terminals were able to achieve a tracking error of less than 0.2 degrees and uplink data rate of at least 9Mbps when operated under worst case motion. Key design choices and improvements between the earliest and later designs are presented.

Both awards are associated with the Cobra X/Ka Tri-Band Maritime Satellite Communications Terminal which has recently been deployed on numerous vessel platforms by the Royal Australian Navy. Cobra M2 Ka- dual-band Maritime Terminal Receives WGS Certification
EM Solutions Cobra M2 Maritime Satcom Terminal has successfully completed the WGS testing and certification process and been notified by the certification authority that the terminals are now able to operate at Ka-Band on the WGS Satellite Network. The testing phases of the certification process were completed by the Australian Certification Authority within the Satcom Systems Program Office.

EM Solutions, the Brisbane, Australia-based technology developer of innovative microwave and on-the-move radio and satellite products, has been awarded a AUD$ 6.5M contract by global prime contractor Thales for the supply of satellite radio systems to support a major connectivity project.
EM Solutions’ ability to make timely modifications to their commercial off-the-shelf products to suit Thales’ specific customer requirements was a key factor in determining the contract award. In 2016 a framework agreement was signed between the two companies to streamline ordering, and in 2018, EM Solutions’ work was again recognised when they took out Thales Australia’s Supplier of the Year award for Export Achievement.

New Cobra-class terminals augment government satcom capacity with Inmarsat Global Xpress
Inmarsat (LSE: ISAT.L), the global mobile satellite operator, is providing its Global Xpress (GX) satellite service to the Australian Border Force. Eight maritime vessels have recently been fitted with new Cobra-class satellite communications terminals, designed, developed and manufactured by EM Solutions that enable governments to augment the capacity they have on government-owned satellites with commercial satellites.

Equipping Australia’s Defence Forces: A versatile multi – satellite terminal for robust on-the-move communications
Broadband communications anywhere, anytime, anyplace can only be provided by satellite communications. But when communications is mission-critical, how can it be made more assured, resilient, and resistant to hostile or environmental interference?
Recognising that such a requirement existed, the Royal Australian Navy, through Australia’s Capability Technology Demonstration Program, worked with EM Solutions to bring such a capability to fruition.
EM Solutions wins contract from US Agency for 10Gbps mobile backhaul link
EM Solutions announced today that it had won an initial order from a US Government Agency to develop and supply its 10 Gbps E-band backhaul radios for evaluation in ship to shore communications.
Announcing the contract, EM Solutions Managing Director and CEO Dr. Rowan Gilmore said “EM Solutions has been selected to showcase its leading edge radio technology for challenging applications to an important US customer. We will integrate the new 10Gbps E-band radios developed by our subsidiary EMClarity into the same steerable gimbal systems used in our comms-on-the-move (OTM) Cobra satellite terminals, enabling the new radio systems to be used for high speed data backhaul, even where either end is in motion”.
