Military Communication and Informations Systems - MilCIS 2015
Rowan’s contribution was a tutorial on microwave and satellite communications, and in particular on the radio air interface (the physical layer) and how wireless backhaul works. Illustrating comparisons in terrestrial and satellite communications links, Rowan demonstrated the trade-offs in typical communications systems. His presentation was aimed at providing a refresher course for communications engineers, field personnel, procurement and project managers. Rowan’s knowledge combined with his impressive teaching background (he is currently an Adjunct Professor in both Business and Electrical Engineering at the University of Queensland) ensures the value of his tutorials and guidance remain first class.
John’s presentation, Simultaneous X and Ka Band Maritime Satcom Terminal Supporting Both Military and Commercial, was about one of EM Solutions own products that is unique for two reasons: The Tri-band on-the-move (OTM) satellite communications terminal works simultaneously with X-band and Ka-band frequencies (Military and Commercial) and also eliminates the need for mechanical scan tracking methods by using monopulse in all bands. John’s presentation highlighted the development and testing processes involved in building the Tri-band OTM, sharing real world examples of challenges and obstacles faced – as well as overcoming these. Special mention must also be made here to Dr Chris Leat (Lead Antenna Designer at EM Solutions) who co-authored the paper with John.
EM Solutions is committed to contributing to the future direction of communication and information systems so presenting at MilCIS was an excellent opportunity. We look forward to seeing everyone again next year with more advancements in technology!
